Vikings Give Clothing Drive a Major Success

Second Annual Event Eclipses Over 1,600 Items For Those in Need

When ��Ƶ Marketing Communications Representative Lisa Evans set her goal for the 2023 Vikings Give clothing drive, it was to surpass last year’s total of 1,000.

Little did she realize it would quickly become a smashing success.

Faculty, staff and students embraced the drive with open arms. In the end, a total of 1,600 clothing items were accumulated during the one-month drive, ranging from winter weather items including adult coats, jackets, and sweaters to leggings, children’s gloves, pants and boots.

The items were donated to the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (NEOCH), less than 5 miles down the street from campus on Perkins Avenue. The organization exists to eliminate the root causes of homelessness while loving our diverse community through organizing, advocacy, education and street outreach.

“I am very proud of the ��Ƶ community for the success of this year’s drive, as not only did we increase the number of items donated, but we increased the reach of the clothing drive with the help of our men’s and women’s basketball team that collected donations during three games,” said Evans. “We also received emails and calls from outside organizations that heard about the drive and wanted to participate, which allowed us to collect more items to give to NEOCH to clothe the unhoused community.”

Evans quickly showed her gratitude to those who made the drive possible.

“I would like to thank all 11 box hosts, FAST, duplicating, ��Ƶ athletics, University Marketing and every ��Ƶ community member that donated items for this drive, as well as the response in donations we received this year,” she said. “There were many instances where donation boxes were overflowing with items on the floor and had to be emptied into bags to make space for more donations, which can be attributed to the heart of our community and our desire to give back; I am also thankful to NEOCH for partnering with us for the second year in a row.”

As Evans looks at ways to make the drive even bigger and better for 2024, she already has a plan to accomplish her goal of continuing to provide clothing to those in need and surpassing the 1,600 mark set in 2023.

“There are three things I am looking forward to as we continue the Vikings Give clothing drive,” she said. That includes continuing to increase the number of box hosts on campus and see donation boxes in the residence halls, visible spaces on campus and offices; collaborating with student organizations and getting them involved in the process of collecting donations and maybe even giving them leadership opportunities in organizing the drive; and lastly, have NEOCH make a campus visit to meet our box hosts and leadership team and perhaps even collaborate on a giving day event in the future.”

NEOCH Office and Incoming Donations Manager Toni Mickey was excited about the donations from the ��Ƶ community. She was looking forward to dispersing the items to those in need during the upcoming winter months.

“Thank you to Lisa Evans for coordinating another successful coat drive for our organization (NEOCH) that we will be able to distribute these items to those outside and others living in shelters and that visit the drop-in centers in the area surrounding ��Ƶ State,” she said. “We would like to also thank the maintenance staff for collecting the items and coordinating the two drop-offs.”

New K9 Arrives to Keep ��Ƶ Campus Safe

Joins Fellow K9s Rune and Thor

For the last few years, beloved therapy K9s Rune and Thor have long been associated with providing comfort to the ��Ƶ community.

They now have a new friend – and co-worker – in town.

Two-year-old Axel is the second K9 Explosive detection K9 in programming that started in September 2014 through a Department of Homeland Security grant. Axel, who already has begun his tenure at ��Ƶ, replaced K9 Rex, who retired after nine years of service, subsequently renewing the university’s grant through Homeland Security.

Axel passed his 12-week training course in Hiram, Ohio, with flying colors and was assigned to his new handler, ��Ƶ Police Officer Daniel Aholt.

While Rune and Thor provide the ��Ƶ community with stress relief, Axel’s job differs because he is specially trained to detect explosives. He is also skilled in tracking items carried in by people, either on their persons or in bags, in mass transit and significant crowd event operational environments.

��Ƶ & Keypath Expand Access to Professional Degree Programs

CLEVELAND/CHICAGO (August 31, 2023) – ��Ƶ State University (��Ƶ), in partnership with Keypath Education, is rolling out a comprehensive online degree portfolio across its School of Health Sciences and a part-time online Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree offering with the College of Law. ��Ƶ’s online J.D. is the first of its kind for Keypath Education in the United States and an opportunity for ��Ƶ to differentiate itself within the state of Ohio and across the United States.

��Ƶ will initially launch:

Master of Social Work (MSW) with Advanced Standing and Traditional pathways (2023)
Master of Science Nursing with the following specialties: Nursing Education, Forensic Nursing, Specialized Populations, Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) (2023)
Juris Doctor (J.D.) (2023)

By partnering with Keypath Education, ��Ƶ’s College of Health is expanding its footprint to better meet the needs of hospitals across Ohio. In 2021, there were over 145,000 job postings for social workers (Lightcast, 2022) and only 33,753 MSW degrees conferred nationally (IPEDS, 2022). With the support of Keypath Education, ��Ƶ’s College of Health can expand access to its well-regarded social work and nursing programs to help fill the shortages of essential health and social service providers.

All programs will leverage best practices in the delivery of online didactic coursework and include intensive and synchronous learning opportunities as needed to best meet the needs of the learners as they gain professional competencies. ��Ƶ and Keypath will look to add additional programs from the College of Health in future years with the aim to offer a comprehensive set of health professional programs focused on generating practice-ready graduates to meet the needs of the health systems across Ohio and beyond.

With this partnership, Keypath Education assists in launching its first online J.D. program in the United States, aiding in the transition of the J.D. from a traditional on-campus degree program to online delivery. With support from Keypath Education, ��Ƶ joins a select group of ABA-approved distance education J.D. programs in the country. By moving its part-time evening J.D. program to an online format, ��Ƶ is at the forefront of meeting aspiring lawyers where they want to learn – outside the traditional classroom setting allowing them even more flexibility while they continue in their current careers while pursuing a J.D. to upskill within their current industry or pivot into a new one after graduation. This new degree model will directly assist in meeting the steady demand for legal professionals.

Professional Development Day Brings Colleges, Universities to ��Ƶ

Ideas were flowing during the annual NCCA Conference

��Ƶ State University welcomed 75 individuals from career offices at every college and university across Northeast Ohio as part of the Northeast Consortium of Career Advancement (NCCA) conference on June 14 for a day of community, professional development and growth.

Alongside the ��Ƶ team (inclusive of Career Development & Exploration staff, Wolstein Center Staff, Catering, Parking and Dining Services) that helped with planning and logistics of the day, the planning committee also included Drew Poppleton of Case Western Reserve University and Lauren Conway of ��Ƶ Institute of Art.

The conference was fully funded through the remaining OMIC (Ohio Means Internships & Co-ops) grant funding from the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

Brittany Wampler, the Director of the Office of Career Development and Exploration at ��Ƶ, said the conference last occurred in 2019 before the COVID pandemic took over. Since that point, the world has changed dramatically. It was an excellent time to regroup and think about career services and how they serve students moving forward.

“I think how we look at how we prepare our students to enter the workforce is a lot different now, and their understanding of careers is different,” she said. “When they were learning during Covid, the lack of opportunities to connect what they were learning in the classroom to internship experiences was different, [but now] hopefully we are on the other side of that.”

In addition to two keynote speakers – George Sample, who is the vice president for strategy at the Federal Reserve Bank of ��Ƶ, and Dr. Cheri Rice, who serves as Vice Chancellor for Workforce Alignment at the Ohio Department of Higher Education – attendees participated in breakout sessions with topics ranging from ChatGPT, career narratives, understanding Neurodiversity, and communicating professional skillset through a digital lens.

“At ��Ƶ, we take a lot of pride in how we seek to eliminate the barriers our students face relative to entering their career,” said Wampler (left). “So how do we provide equitable resources, support, and opportunities to get students from when they enter ��Ƶ until graduation and then hopefully crossing the stage at graduation with a job in hand, ready to capitalize and have that return on investment for their degree?”

According to Wampler, some ideas included discussing today’s artificial intelligence shifting the workforce and creating opportunities within education, how to promote and embrace digital transformation, along with educating students on jobs that don’t quite exist…yet.

“How do we better partner with the community and employers while recognizing the resources that are out there and bringing those into colleges and campuses? We are an outcomes-based office, so how do we track our outcomes [and] make sure that we are telling a story with our data that aligns with an institution’s mission?”

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the day was the community-building amongst each college and university represented, whose offices range from a team of one (Lake Erie College) to upwards of 25, depending on the university size. ��Ƶ has a group of 12, which Wampler is extremely grateful for.

“[The main thing is], how do we come together and build a community around some of the same issues that we face with our same student populations and build that community around the room,” she said.

“I’m an idea person, so I hope we can inspire people to think about their own work in a way that inspires them to take some level of action; If people leave here today feeling like they have made connections and have an idea about what they can implement immediately into their own work or strategic planning for the next school year, that is a huge win for this event.”

Vikes Take Note: "Phones Down, It's the Law"

New distracted driving law in effect beginning 4/4 aims to curb cell phone usage at the wheel

Texting and driving might be synonymous with young drivers, but a recent Nationwide Insurance study shows how out of hand things have gotten on the road: one in four Ohioans admit to texting while behind the wheel in the past year. In a bit of related research, over the past five years, distracted driving has accounted for over 60,000 crashes and 209 deaths in Ohio, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

A new law dubbed “Phones Down. It’s the Law” went into effect today and is geared towards cracking down on those numbers. It is now illegal to use or hold a cell phone or electronic device in your hand, lap, or other parts of your body while driving on Ohio roads. However, drivers over 18 years old can make or receive calls via hands-free devices, including: Speakerphone, Earpiece, Wireless Headset, Electronic Watch and Connecting the Phone to Vehicle.

��Ƶ Police Chief Beverly Pettrey says typically, campus police officers provide warnings for violations unless the offense results in an accident or is an extreme safety hazard. However, she believes it will take some time to educate the public.

“I imagine many motorists won’t even realize this law went into effect,” Pettrey said, adding that the simple solution is to put the cellphones away and keep them out of reach while driving. “Even a swipe can be illegal while driving and a reason for an officer to stop you."

The new "Phones Down" law includes a grace period of six months, during which law enforcement will issue warnings in an educational effort to motorists about how to avoid violating the law. Beginning October 4, citations will be issued.
